Gerhard Knies was co-founder of Hamburg Climate Protection Foundation; Initiator and coordinator of the “Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation TREC; creation of the term DESERTEC; development of DESERTEC concept with TREC, Club of Rome and DLR; advisor to French Presidency for the Solar Plan of Union for the Mediterranean; proposal of a DESERTEC Industrial Initiative (Dii GmbH) to the Munich Re-Insurance (October 2008), Co-founder of the DESERTEC Foundation (January 2009) and of DESERTEC University Network DUN (October 2010).
