Ecologist, Gene E. Likens is best known for discovering with colleagues acid rain in North America, for co-founding the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, for founding the Institute of Ecosystem Studies. He holds faculty positions at Yale/Cornell/Rutgers U/ U-Connecticut/Jinan U@Guangzhou; awarded the 2001 National Medal of Science. He was president of Ecological Society of America, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, American Institute of Biological Sciences, International Society of Limnology, among others; and author/co-author/editor of 24 books and over 600 scientific papers
