Antonio Oposa
Laureate
Asian Environmental Law expert
Philippines
International Environmental Law Award, 2008
His work is noted for the cases he filed to protect Life-Sources. In the early ‘90s, representing children and future generations of Filipinos, he filed a case to cancel all logging concessions in the country. After losing in the trial court, he appealed to the Supreme Court. In the landmark case of *Minors Oposa, *the Philippine Supreme Court enforced the principle of inter-generational responsibility -- the legal right of future generations to take action, even in court, to protect their natural patrimony. In 2008, after a ten-year legal battle, the Philippine Supreme Court ordered 12 government agencies to clean up Manila Bay. He has also organized and led some of the most daring direct enforcement actions against environmental crime syndicates.
